Kennedy Odede could have used his opportunity to attend Wesleyan University as a permanent ticket out of Kibera, the massive slum in Nairobi, Kenya where he grew up. Instead, he went back to Kibera and founded Shining Hope for Communities, a non-profit that operates a school for girls and a host of other services aimed at lifting Kibera’s residents out of poverty. Working with Kennedy on these commentaries was one of the most satisfying opportunities I had during my 20 years with Beaupre/Brodeur.
